Amazones:
The Women Master Drummers of Guinea

Sponsored by Pattison

World Music

Ages: 7 and over • Duration: 50 minutes

Amazones’ impassioned and masterful drumming brings the cultural richness
of African music, storytelling and history to the Festival. Featuring the beautiful
costumes of great African heroines, the group is named after the warrior women
of the ancient kingdom of Dohomey (now Benin).

Amazones personify the culmination of a journey through discrimination to survival through their art form, punctuated by powerful percussion and traditional instruments like the balafon, krin, and bolon. This ensemble of outstanding women drummers opens the door to a world of wonder with their powerful, energetic and grandiose spectacle as they send a message of peace, optimism and serenity.

“…they play with a fury, pounding out heart-racing rhythms and dancing into near frenzies… racking up rave reviews and challenging social conventions.”

Amazones
